Ozone, made of three bonded oxygen atoms, is found 15-30 km above Earth, has a strong smell, is blue, and blocks sunlight from hitting the surface of Earth. The 22nd lesson in a series of 36 specifically focuses on the important elements and their compounds from groups 16, 17, and 18 on the periodic table. It explores oxygen, sulfur, fluorine, chlorine, and compounds of noble gases. Classes learn their structures, discuss their preparation, and can explain their different uses in our lives.

Instructional Ideas
- Provide groups with choices of compounds to research and present their findings to the class; choices might be ozone, sulfuric acid, chlorine, fluorocarbons, or any of the noble gases
Classroom Considerations
- Level of concepts best fits higher-level high school chemistry courses
- British versions of words are used throughout the lab such as learnt
Pros
- In-text questions found at the end of each portion of the lesson test pupils knowledge; keys are located at the end of the lesson
- Lesson includes an assessment, titled terminal exercise, which is 15 questions
