Principals need support, not only in their early years, but throughout their careers. Support and encouragement can come from networks of principals who meet regularly to share problems and solutions and reflect on their practice. Districts can provide support from those who have "earned authority" and who are respected from having excelled in the principalship. Prevention strategies for principal "burnout" may include spreading leadership to teacher-leaders, retention incentives, and providing resources to principals to accomplish their work.
