In this lesson, young scholars investigate the motivations of foreign-born artists who have come to America for reasons of artistic freedom. They also examine the impact these artistic refugees have had on American society as well as the effect of their immigration on their art. Requires viewing of select segments from "Destination America," the four-part series aired on PBS, but many useful resources, requiring only Internet access, are embedded within the lesson, including a segment about Arturo Toscanini, whose immigration story is central to this lesson.
