Eight lesson plans for exploring aspects of World War I, also known as the Great War, with instructions for introducing middle-school learners to the causes of the conflict; to the great symbol of the war's stalemate--the trenches; to the devastating cost of the war on civilians and on the soldiers; to the war's end; to the fragile peace that ensued; and to the war's legacy. Although the lessons were designed to complement the PBS documentary "The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century," access to the film series is not required. Includes useful handouts to aid students in their understanding and analysis.
