Phoneme Substitution, Harder (With Letters)

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Emergent readers create new words by changing a phoneme, using sets of letter cards to spell out each CVC word. They begin by substituting initial sounds, then final sounds, and lastly the middle vowel. Help them sound out each word, segmenting the sounds and finding letters to correspond with new phonemes. The letter cards are provided here in different sizes depending on your needs. There is even a card-holder template you can create for individual or partner work. This would work best in a small group as guided practice.
