Photo : Sir Louis Hippolyte La Fontaine

Curated by ACT

La Fontaine fought to have French recognized again as an official language after the Act of Union in 1841 removed this status, and was instrumental in developing a new linguistic policy for the government. His support for French rights made him an object of public resentment and caused his home to be attacked by Anglophones.
