Over a period of 35 years, earthquakes and volcanoes combined only accounted for 1.5 percent of the deaths from natural disasters in the United States. The 15th lesson in a 20-part series connects the locations of earthquakes and volcanoes. Scholars use latitude and longitude markings to label volcanoes and earthquakes on a world map. Further analysis leads to the realization that most are related to plate boundaries.

Instructional Ideas
- If students don't have time to make individual maps, create the class map and then take a photo to print to include in their science notes
Classroom Considerations
- Requires prior knowledge of finding locations on a map using only longitude and latitude
- Lessons in the series build upon one another and need to be completed in order
Pros
- Mapping activity makes it easy to draw the correct conclusion
- Lesson easily adapts to higher or lower ability levels
Cons
- Video links do not work
