Saxon Math: Algebra 2 (Section 1)

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet
This Saxon Math: Algebra 2 (Section 1) unit plan also includes:

This first of twelve algebra 2 resources provides a broad review of many algebra 1 concepts through a number of separable lessons and labs. Starting with the real number system and its subsystems, the sections quickly but thoroughly move through function notation, percent of change, simplifying expressions, and solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable. Special attention is paid over several sections to developing and using matrices. Each section includes a generous set of practice problems, and every few sections are broken up by a discovery technology lab. A great resource for review at higher levels or for the advanced algebra 1 learner.

Instructional Ideas
  • Consider breaking out individual lessons or lab activities for remediation or to extend thinking for advanced learners
  • Have the class research pop culture sources for data sets that would benefit from the covered matrix organization and analysis. Other research topics might include examples of direct variation and equations / inequalities
  • These lessons provide a great lab investigation for integrating discovery learning and technology methods into algebra class
Classroom Considerations
  • Individual lessons and labs are stand alone, but practice problems tend to integrate concepts from previous lessons
  • Lesson 1 has included answers within each problem, as in a teacher edition, but does not include a student version without answers
Pros
  • Detailed problems aligned with each lesson
  • Summative assessment at the end of resource
  • Each lesson includes multiple example problems and explanations
  • Labs easily separated out for use in your class or included within the overall section
Cons
  • Answers only included for the first lesson
  • Concepts from each lesson not always used or reinforced throughout the section
