Do scholars understand multiplication as sets of numbers? Help them grasp this concept through groups of objects arranged as a makeshift multiplication number sentence. They examine the sets and fill in boxes to indicate how many sets of which number and the total (i.e. 9 sets of 2 = 18). After doing four of these, there are two extra problems that have pupils create their own object sets (whatever they want to draw) representing a given number sentence. If learners are ready, write one of these on the board, erase "sets of," and replace it with the multiplication symbol to illustrate this relationship.
