This Silica Tetrahedron Model lesson plan also includes:
Very simply, pairs of learners construct a model of the tetrahedral silica structure using raisins and toothpicks. They dip it into a soapy solution and then blow a bubble "atom" into its center. The lesson plan gives instructions that you can either explain or print out for each pair. Brief background information about silicates and a few valuable resource links are written into the plan. This visual activity can be used as an enrichment to your chemistry unit on atomic structure or an earth science unit on mineral structure.
