Calculate the areas of scale drawings until a more efficient method emerges. Pupils find the relationship between the scale factor of a scale drawing and the scale of the areas. They determine the scale of the areas is the square of the scale factor of the drawings. They use this information to solve problems in the 16th portion of a unit of 20.

Instructional Ideas
- Provide several concrete opportunities for the class to determine the scale factor of the areas and then use a general formula
- Lead a discussion on the changes to the scale factor if trying to find the perimeter and not the area
Classroom Considerations
- Requires the ability to compute scale factors
Pros
- Writes the percent formula using the names of the object to provide clarity on which is the part and which is the whole
- Includes the anticipated class responses to discussion questions
Cons
- None
