Class members brainstorm a list of people in the news (immigrants, millennials, etc.). Teams then select one to research. Using the provided worksheet and guided by a list of questions, the teams examine the stereotypes in news reports and media about their group. Instructional Ideas
- The AAUW report, published in 2016, is slightly dated; have groups research and update the executives, school superintendents, and elected offices graphics
- Provide class members with a link to the AAUW blog post if assigned as out-of-class reading
Classroom Considerations
- The activity presumes that a protocol is in place to permit a safe, respectful discussion of stereotypes and biases
- The AAUW blog post is 66 pages in length; if assigned as out-of-class reading, develop a study guide to support readers
- Requires copies of the "Identifying Stereotypes" worksheet, one per group
Pros
- Includes step-by-step directions and discussion questions
Cons
- None
