By measuring the wavelength, frequency, and intensity of electromagnetic radiation, scientists determine the temperature, density, and composition of far away items. Scholars rotate through ten lab stations using a spectroscope at each to determine the light source provided. As they discover the ease at which they can identify the elements, they understand how scientists know the chemical composition of far away stars.

Instructional Ideas
- Ensure each group has a female in it, as one in every 12 boys has color-blindness that will impact the results of the activity and many don't know it yet
Classroom Considerations
- Requires prior knowledge of algebra, the metric system, the electromagnetic spectrum, the Bohr model of an atom, and the scientific method
- Follow all safety procedures to avoid burns, electrocution, blindness, and eye injuries
Pros
- Provides all worksheets in html, Word, and PDF formats
- Includes teacher tips throughout
Cons
- None
