Instructional Ideas
  • Use at the beginning and end of the novel unit, encouraging kids to reference parts of the books that have convinced them to change their minds
  • A good warm-up activity at the start of class
  • Have kids expand their writing to a narrative essay about a time they felt the same way that they see in the picture
Classroom Considerations
  • Picture is very simple; you may need to have a short discussion with kids before they begin writing to bring up the themes of loneliness and happiness
Pros
  • Creative and expressive for kids to fully engage with the text before opening the book
  • Allows struggling readers to access the text and themes
Cons
  • You will need to provide additional assessments or extensions for the activity
