Seventh graders translate word sentences to algebraic expressions. In groups of three, 7th graders determine the number of times their heart beats in fifteen seconds. Using this data, they calculate the heartbeats per minute, in five minutes and in one day. Students discuss how to use a variable expression to describe the data. They explore keywords for translating word phrases into mathematical expressions. Students rewrite variable expressions as word phrases.
