When we imagine President Lincoln struggling to preserve the nation, we conjure up many images in our minds. There was the excitement of political rallies, the soldiers' fear of the battlefield, and the grandeur of the Executive Mansion. However, to understand the power of the Presidency, we must also picture his desk, covered with a mix of ordinary and extraordinary objects. These might best convey his contributions to preserving the Union. We invite you to take a seat at Mr. Lincoln's desk and see some of the everyday items that helped him make history.
