To commemorate the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition, the U.S. Mint modified the nickel to reflect these national milestones. This page has images of the 2005 obverse design of President Jefferson with the word "Liberty" in his own handwriting. The 2005 Spring reverse design features the American bison. The Summer/Fall reverse design has a scene of the Pacific with the inscription "Ocean in view! O! The joy!" Just studying the common nickel gives students so much to learn and explore about the nation's history.
