University of Illinois: The Early Centuries of the Greek Roman East

Read about the history of the Romiosini, or Greek Middle Ages and the development of the Greek-Roman east. The article is divided into two different sections. The first section includes the foundation of Constantinople as a means to unite the Roman Empire. Also included is the adoption of Christianity as the official religion. The second section explores the time when the Emperor Justinian ruled and it includes his efforts to codify the Roman legal system as well as to advance efforts in architecture, particularly with the building of the church of St. Sophia. Literature and the arts are also discussed in this section.
