This site by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, part of the 'Documenting the American South' project, contains information and texts about first-person narratives of the American south. These documents give the viewpoint of the south by southerners. There are diaries, autobiographies, memoirs, travel accounts, and ex-slave narratives. The introduction and about the project sections provide an explanation of the importance of these literary pieces to the U.S. history. Then you can find many texts in the Collection of Electronic Texts.
