Get your learners to think outside the box. Students require a good understanding of ratios and their relationship to fractions to complete the problem. The only quantities given in the problem are the ratio of the number of votes for two of the candidates and the fraction of votes a third candidate received. Your number crunchers must reason abstractly to come up with the fractional difference between two candidates. Extend the lesson by asking if the ratios could apply to a different number of voters.
