Monarch butterfly populations have decreased by 90 percent over the past 20 years due to misuse and ineffectiveness of some pesticides. Given the challenge to increase pesticide safety and effectiveness, the class, through discussion, writes a list of environmental factors to consider. Then in groups, participants write a hypothesis for effective application on their given plot of land, conduct a field study to test it, and analyze their results.

Instructional Ideas
- Activity fits as way to teach scientific method in a real-world setting
Classroom Considerations
- Needs include weather measurement tools (anemometer, wind vane, and thermometer); all other materials can be found in classroom
- Requires areas outdoors where groups can conduct their experiments
- Teachers may want to repeat the experiment on days with different weather, which extends the duration of the activity over a few days
Pros
- Includes handouts and activity instructions
- Scholars get to test their own hypothesis outdoors!
Cons
- None
