Curated by ACT

Salem merchant John Gardner had this Federalist-style house built in 1804-05 by Samuel McIntire. It was the site of a notorious murder in 1841 that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe. It is now owned by the Peabody Essex Museum, which offers guided tours.
