George Archibald may be singlehandedly responsible for the survival of the whooping crane. He pioneered revolutionary techniques for helping cranes to survive while in the care of humans, such as having caregivers wear crane costumes. He is also responsible for the establishment of large bird sanctuaries around the world and educational programs where local residents learn how to protect cranes. Archibald was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, but helped to found the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
