Lesson Plan

Writing Fix: Serendipitous Crazy Illustrations

Curated by ACT

In this lesson, Flotsam, written by David Wiesner, is used as a mentor text. Students will analyze the author's use of crazy illustrations and word choices. Students will then use a game on this web site where they will click to discover unique and crazy words. From the computer-generated verbs, nouns, and adjectives, and prepositional phrases, ideas for crazy illustrations will be generated for students to design in their writer's notebooks. [Requires Adobe Reader.] Marissa Moss, author of the Amelia's Logbook, is used as a mentor text during the extension of the lesson. [Requires Adobe Reader.]
