This lesson plan extends student understanding of the concept of "truisms" and "writing hooks" to introduce writings. Gretchen Bernabei's Reviving the Essay, the book Fox, written by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks, will be read aloud and pictures from the CD Lightning in a Bottle: Visual Prompts for Insights by Bernabei will be shared to engage students in further discussion of truisms. Students will collect evidence from Fox that validate truisms and place them in a graphic organizer for future development and eventual publication.
