Teach the skill of reading silently through modeling. The teacher demonstrate how to read silently and also gives instructions on decoding skills. Individuals then read silently using  the book Polly's Shop . The teacher uses an assessment checklist to rate each child's ability to read silently and, at the end, also has each one answer three comprehension questions about the story.
