Health Smart Virginia: 8th Grade Social Emotional Health

Collector: Ann V.

Eighth graders investigate various health concepts, skills, and behaviors to plan for their personal, lifelong health goals. These include awareness and consequences of risky behaviors, disease prevention, overall wellness, and identification of community health resources. The curriculum set begins with a resource designed for instructors. The seven-page packet provides an overview of the Health Smart unit, includes the objectives and goals of the unit, details suggested procedures, and provides links to additional lessons and activities. Participants learn about socially conscious social networking, how they can step up and help someone exhibiting self-harming behaviors, and how to cope with stress. They identify risk factors and warning signs, and strategies to get an individual to seek help. The collection also includes journal prompts, hands-on activities, and a variety of assessment options.
