A seven-lesson unit module offers high schoolers an opportunity to investigate the role diplomats play in an interconnected world. Acting as Early Modern era (1450-1750) diplomats, groups negotiate treaties to further the interests of their empire. They organize an intelligence briefing based on their analysis of primary sources that represent intercepted intelligence then write, and deliver, toasts to empires with which they want to trade. The unit concludes with groups planning a strategy for negotiating a trade treaty, then negotiating and writing a trade treaty.
