Applying Tangents

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

What does geometry have to do with depression? It's an angle of course! Learners apply the tangent ratio to problem solving questions by finding missing lengths. Problems include angles of elevation and angles of depression. Pupils make a connection between tangent and the slope of the line created by a given angle of elevation or depression.

Instructional Ideas
  • Mix in examples that apply a ratio other than tangent to encourage pupils to think about the appropriate ratio to use
  • Form collaborative groups to work through examples
Classroom Considerations
  • Learners may have difficulty understanding problem solving questions and drawing a related picture; supplement practice if necessary to allow them to practice this skill
  • Lesson is number 30 in a series of 36
Pros
  • Incorporates strong visuals to help pupils understand angle types and problem solving
  • Provides an opening exercise, exit ticket, and scaffolding suggestions
Cons
  • None
