Comparing information found in images, charts, and graphs with that found in written text can be a challenge for even senior high scholars. Provide learners with an opportunity to practice this skill with an exercise that asks them to examine several charts, read an article about obesity, and then take a short quiz based on these two informational documents. A second exercise involves comparing the information gathered from viewing a painting that depicts the working conditions of slaves working in good mines and comparing that information with an excerpt from a document about the working conditions of slaves in 1705 Virginia. The materials are designed as a skills assessment but could also be used as the basis of a group work activity.
