How Do You Figure Out if an Absolute Value Inequality is an AND or OR Compound Inequality?

The problem is to determine if a given inequality represents an AND or OR compound inequality. There has to be a way to make that determination. Well, one way is to graph it on a number line and actually see what happens. Do the lines move towards each other (AND) or away from each other (OR)?
