Mico (or your favorite puppet) helps emergent readers recognize words from segmented phonemes. Explain to learners that he struggles with pronouncing words and needs their help. Model how Mico segments sounds in single-syllable words. Using the picture cards provided, present three cards to scholars and ask them which one Mico wants. They practice blending the sounds to make a word, then recognizing the object the word represents. There are a few levels of thinking happening here and great learning opportunities.
