Psychologist Lillien Jane Martin (1851-1943) taught high school science after earning her A.B. from Vassar College. She then studied at the University of Gottingen (1894-1898) and became a professor of psychology at Stanford University, 1899-1916. Martin received an honorary doctorate from University of Bonn in 1913 and a few years later became a consulting psychologist and psychopathologist, and head of a mental hygiene clinic in San Francisco. She published over twelve books, including Salvaging Old Age (1930) and Sweeping the Cobwebs (1933)
