Although Mahatma Gandhi was nominated five different years for the Nobel Peace Prize, he died before he could receive one. The Nobel Prize Committee differed over whether a prize could be awarded posthumously, and there were complications as he had left no will and it was unclear whom to give the award to. The last year he was nominated was 1948 just before his death and, in the end, no award was given that year, some say leaving an empty spot for him.
