Transformations in the Coordinate Plane

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Your learners connect the new concepts of transformations in the coordinate plane to their previous knowledge using the solid vocabulary development in this unit. Like a foreign language, mathematics has its own set of vocabulary terms to comprehend and apply, so learners strengthen their understanding as they read definitions, study diagrams and examples, answer questions, and apply the concepts over the seven sections of this unit. Included are the concepts of translations, reflections, and rotations, proving triangles congruent by SSS, SAS, HL, ASA, and AAS, applying the Distance and Midpoint Formulas, and writing equations for and constructing perpendicular lines, parallel lines and polygons.

Instructional Ideas

As solid as the concrete examples, definitions, and direct practice problems are in this unit, you will notice that using a discussion strategy and/or adding additional questions will complete the conceptual understanding of some of the topics. On page five, for instance, asking learners to find the pattern in the coordinate changes of each of the points of a pre-image compared to its image would emphasize the essential question concerned with translating polygons around on a coordinate grid.

Classroom Considerations

For a deeper understanding of the numerous vocabulary terms included in this unit, build in collaborative learning strategies to encourage learners to use their vocabulary words in conversations and discussions.
