C3 Teachers: Inquiries: Emancipation

Curated by ACT

A learning module on the emancipation of African American slaves after the Civil War. It includes several supporting questions accompanied by formative tasks and source materials, followed by a summative performance task. Students will investigate the question of whether Abraham Lincoln should have the credit for freeing the slaves or whether the slaves freed themselves. They will look at the legislation between 1861 and 1865 that helped end slavery, arguments in support of the slaves having freed themselves, and the ramifications of this debate over the interpretation of history. The module can be downloaded in PDF or DOC format.
