Chance Experiments with Outcomes That Are Not Equally Likely

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

The fifth portion of the 25-part series introduces probabilities calculated from outcomes that are not equally likely. Class members use tables to calculate probabilities of events, add outcome's probabilities, and find complements. Pupils learn to calculate the probabilities of the individual events based upon the total number of outcomes and the number of outcomes for each criteria.

Instructional Ideas
  • Introduce the lesson using a spinner that is divided into unequal sections with each section a different color
  • Make a connection to finding probabilities with unequal outcomes to finding the probabilities of events that were not equally likely
Classroom Considerations
  • The class should be familiar with finding probabilities with equally likely outcomes
Pros
  • Includes tables to organize information
  • Shows the arithmetic used to arrive at the final solution
Cons
  • None
