Based off of the hit television show NUMB3RS, this lesson has students explore various methods of estimation. Framed in the context of a ballroom dance, students are to determine approximately how many people fit in the ballroom. A couple of different methods are presented, but students are encouraged to invent their own methods as well. In mathematics, such estimation problems are known as Fermi Problems.
