NOAA Enrichment in Marine Sciences and Oceanography (NEMO) Curriculum

Collector: Ann V.

Introduce scholars to the Marine Sciences and Oceanography with 23 lessons covering marine science, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, technology, and marine policy. Aligned with national science teaching standards, the lessons are designed to support a course or club or prepare a National Ocean Sciences Bowl team. Each lesson contains a PowerPoint presentation, a teacher’s guide, and experiments that solidify understanding. Topics include how to describe location and time, carbon dioxide levels in the ocean, the biogeochemical cycle, and dead zones and how they form. Pupils investigate factors that cause different water densities, tides, waves, and tsunamis to occur and the mechanism of El Nino/Southern Oscillation. They also learn about the technology that marine scientists use, explore tectonic plates, and learn how different plate movements cause certain geologic features. Other lessons introduce plankton, vertebrate and invertebrate marine life, marine ecosystems, ocean zones, and food webs.
